In 1899 Buffalo’s leading citizens founded the Wanakah Country Club overlooking the waters of Lake Erie. Originally a 9-hole “weekend” golf course, the location was considered perfect due to the convenience of the train station, beautiful views of the lake and cooling summer breezes. A 1913 redesign of the course, adding a second nine holes, the addition of tennis courts and a new “Shinnecock” styled club house completed the golf clubs transformation to one of the finest country clubs in western New York.
Today Wanakah boasts a premier 18-hole golf course, three Har-Tru surfaced tennis courts, and an Olympic sized swimming pool. In addition Wanakah offers a full-service golf pro shop, a full-service tennis pro shop and a beautiful 10,000 square foot club house containing the finest restaurant and banquet capabilities.
The 18-hole golf course is a par 72 measuring 6952 yards from the back tees. It has a course rating of 71.9 and a slope of 129 from the men’s tees, and a course rating of 73.5 and a slope of 134 from the back tees.
The Arthur Hills Course Architectural firm recently developed a new drainage and master plan for the golf course. Under the direction of course architect Chris Wilczynski renovations to holes number 1,2,4,9 and part of 5 have been completed.
